Description:
Boldly patterned lapwing with small red wattles and long yellow legs. Sexes alike. Black cap and breast, red bill with black tip, and yellow legs. In flight, shows white greater-covert wing-bar and black tail band. Juvenile is duller than adult, with whitish throat.
Distribution:
Uncommon summer visitor to the lower areas of Diamer district along Indus. Prefers open areas such as cultivated land and grassland with nearby pools, lakes, streams or rivers. Mostly a lowland species up to 1800m.
Behavior:
Feeds mostly at dawn and dusk, and during moonlit night. Foraging behavior much like that of other lapwings, making short runs, then stops and reaches to ground to take prey. Diet consists of beetles and other insects, including ants, butterfly and fly larvae, grasshoppers, crickets, bugs, earwigs and termites; also molluscs, worms and crustaceans.
